It has been over six months since the China-Taiwan Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) was ratified, and fears by some that the Taiwan trade pact would doom the island's economy have yet to be realized. Taiwan's economy expanded at a robust 10.82% pace last year and continues to grow in 2011. The short-term economic benefits of the trade agreement are likely adding to that growth, while the negative features that critics have attributed to the ECFA are more of a longer term concern.
The island's current government is relatively Beijing-friendly, and they believe that regulations in the trade pact will benefit Taiwan's economy. On the other hand, the opposition DDP party has continually warned that the trade agreement will widen the gap between rich and poor in Taiwan, and lead to an exodus of industries while causing housing prices to soar as cash is brought in by mainland investors.

Thirty high-quality Taiwan products are taking a nationwide tour currently. These Taiwan products selected from 974 products submitted for the 2011 Taiwan Excellence Gold Awards will travel from Taipei to New Taipei City, Greater Taichung, Yunlin County, Greater Tainan, Greater Kaohsiung and Yilan County until April 3, affirms the Bureau of Foreign Trade, the organiser. Trade officials say that allowing the public to experience these Taiwan products is a government's initiative to promote domestic quality and design. Also it will allow the public to vote for their favourite Taiwan products through the bureaus online ballot. This will be vital to choose the Gold Award winners, says bureau director-general Bill Cho.
On 15 April, a nine-person panel of judges from Taiwan, Japan, the US and Germany will announce 10 finalists.
